URL Shortening Services

Judging by the number of requests received for inclusion in TweetDeck, the marketplace for URL shortening services must be a blossoming one. Obviously spurred on by the growth of Twitter, where the act of URL shortening makes the most sense, the sheer volume means it is, sadly, unfeasible to support all of them in TweetDeck.

Having looked over the usage of the top 100 URL shorteners it is interesting to note that of the existing 13 supported services 3 are outside the top 100, 2 are outside the top 60 and only 5 are in the top 10. It is obvious that the current list of services is out of date and does not provide as much value as it could. To rectify this the supported services will be replaced with the current top 5 services and regularly updated. These 5 services equate to 90% of all shortened URLs in the reporting period.

Therefore as of the next full release of TweetDeck the supported URL shorteners will be (in alphabetical order):

  1. bit.ly
  2. is.gd
  3. tinyurl.com
  4. tr.im
  5. twurl.nl
Please scream loudly in the comments if you vehemently object to this change or want to propose a different/better solution. Is usage/popularity or functionality the best metric for this kind of decision? Should we have "guest" URL shortening services based on unique functionality?

Since we are talking about shortening for Twitter and we are limited to 140 characters might be a good idea to go for the shortest possible shortening url service i.e. is.gd & tr.im

Which of these offer tracking features? I like ow.ly, used in HootSuite. I am about to have a look into URL shortening services that offer payments to the publisher in exchange for header ads and click throughs. Is it likely any of these will feature in TweetDeck?

I think one issue could be is that most users will just accept the default selection (bit.ly) in TweetDeck. Perhaps if it defaulted to a "Random" section (which the user could override on a URL/permanent basis), it'll help even out the stats (and help avoid overloading any single service). If you could override the "Random" list (i.e. disable, say, tinyurl.com from the list), it'll be brilliant.

Are you planning to integrate user accounts so we can track our clicks? That would be a fantastic improvement!

I suggest looking into letting the user decide, kind of like an a la carte addition of a service, and let the service plug into your api.

Some services are less popular, but have a nice feature that sets them apart -- like being able to edit the destination url like cli.gs does.

Bummer, we were hoping to contact you guys about inclusion of our new tool after our next release, which we think adds an interesting social twist on URL sharing.

Our marketshare is still fairly tiny compared to the sites you mention, but my (biased) opinion is that you should look to support different functionalities versus just the most popular. TinyURL, though the biggest, really has no value-add. I like the "guest" idea :-)

I think it's only right to have the most popular services in the list, but I would certainly like to see maybe one "new" service in there to see how people get on with it.
I would also agree with others above - having TweetDeck link to a user's individual account with a shortening service is something that has to come - without this link in place there is very little point in having different services

BudURL is great for tracking links and because they let you use your own domain name instead of theirs (for a price) — maybe it is a niche tool, but it is mostly used by more professional social media users and seems to have good alignment with the TweetDeck audience. I saw tr.im for the first time. I have been using Bit.ly, but this will replace it. What I WISH we could have, is the ability to choose one, in settings, and add login information for each one, in settings. That way, my shortened URLs can be tracked.

If I could have my way, I would add a new section in settings, and have a list of "supported" URL shortening apps. Then, have a checkbox next to each one. If the box next to it is checked, then it shows up on the list of available sites. If not, it does not. Then, every few months, make sure the top 5 are added, and kept up on... maybe even make a list of 3 or 4 that you say you will support, as long as the sites themselves are actively worked on. Then, we can be sure the one we choose, does not go away, inside of tweetdeck, unless the service itself goes away.

Thank you so much for tr.im. I love it because of the stats that I can see with it. Can you login to your tr.im account through the latest version of TweetDeck?
Mar 23, 2009
I think the ideal solution (albeit not the quickest to implement) is to have a simple plugin system, like Firefox's search plugins, that would allow users to add any URL-shortening service to TweetDeck. A more robust plugin system could allow some of the API support the folks above are clammering for. (If URL-shortening services are going to continue proliferating the way we're seeing now, wouldn't it be great if they unified their APIs? A man can dream, right?)

The feature I would most like to see TweetDeck add with regard to URL shortening would be support for custom URLs, as supported by tr.im and many other services, so I could enter both a URL and a "slug" to turn http://somelongurl.com/.... into http://tr.im/customurl

For the record, the URL-shortening services I use most are (roughly in order) is.gd, TinyURL, tr.im, and Ginx.

Sounds good. Please add API support for bit.ly while you're at it (shouldn't be hard, just needs a spot in your options dialog for the API key and then attach that when making the request for the shortened URL)

The true success of any url shortener service comes from the "endorsement" or "inclusion" of the service in a software such as TweetDeck. Those services you listed above are successful because of programs that make it easy for the users to use the service. Think about it ... would you really go to a website with an address of "bit.ly" ... naw ... not likely but because their service has been integrated into great softwares on the web that allow a quick click approach ... they have become successful. Curious to see how many urls are converted from their website verses through TweetDeck.

Never-the-less, my vote would have went to TwitLik (http://twitlik.com) and yeah I am partial but I don't use ... and won't use any other service.

Being the creator of idek.net, I'm sad to see it cut from the list of tweetdeck url shorteners. At the same time, I can understand your desire to reduce the amount of time spent managing one feature of your app.

While I feel that many of the metrics idek provides aren't fully duplicated by most of the other services, I don't think any one other services can differentiate enough to edge out the top 5 you have chosen.

THAT IS -- aside from tinyurl. Honestly, it doesn't really provide any value and isn't really that short. I would suggest dropping tinyurl in favor of another shortener which has more support from users and more features.

Whether that's idek.net or the next shortener in your list (#6) is up to you and the tweetdeck community.

For any idekers out there, remember you can still use idek without any copying or pasting by using the idek tweetit bookmark. For more info, go to http://idek.net/url-shortening-bookmarks.php

Thanks again for providing tweetdeck to everyone for free, it is well appreciated!

I've just come across http://www.andymatthews.net/code/shrinkURL/ (ShrinkURL) which appears to be a shortening service wrapper for AIR applications. Could this be implemented (it has 26 shortening services built in currently) - Tweetdeck would only have to then support one API style call (to ShrinkURL's wrapper) and you wouldn't have to worry about supporting/maintaining the list (just downloading ShrinkURL every so often).

Anyone that wants their shorten service included thereafter, will need to bother a third party instead ;)

I think having a rotating top 5 is a good idea but it should be used with caution perhaps. TweetDeck is a popular program and having your shortening service in TweetDeck will help slightly in keeping you in that top ten regardless of the quality from say the #6 link.

I'd personally also like the ability to add my preferred URL shortening service. If there's one I'd prefer to use, I would really like a way to plug in into TweetDeck somehow.

I'll scream fairly quietly, thank you.... a reasonable solution would be for Twitter to provide an on-your-home-page URL shortener, rather than force people into a time consuming two step process. I care less about which shortener is used than that the process is readily available. Since the default seems to be tinyurl.com, that's fine by me.

The problem with this is that you're creating a feedback loop. I like the idea of looking to see which URL shorteners are being used, but I know that I only started using bit.ly because that was the first one on Tweetdeck and I didn't have any particular reason to find a different service yet.

If you're only going to include 5, look to see which ones are being used independent of platform.

As of 0.24.2b, zi.ma is borked. Put any URL in the box and click the Shorten button with zi.ma selected and it returns the HTML code for the page and next to the tweet box it says "What are you doing?" or something like that.

My favorite URL shorteners are: is.gd, zi.ma, bit.ly and ow.ly - in no particular order.

I like the suggestion below for a plugin system of some sort. This way us end users can help extend TweetDeck and possibly make life easier for you and make TweetDeck even more useful.

I'd love the ability to customize the list, adding entries using syntax such as "http://tinyurl.com/create.php?url='%s'". (and perhaps fields for name "%n" and description "%d" and tweet contents "%t" as well, in case the shortener is a more complex one).

That way I could use my own homebrewed url shortener when tweeting. Mine presents users with a page showing who created the link, a description, and where it leads so that they know where they're heading and why before clicking. I created it after some friends asked for it.

Look at http://my.longurl.net

www.longurl.net have some features which is unique and is not suported in other url shortening services. You can put your own ads at the top of the redirected page. You can also put your ads on URLs of other users. You can install longurl plugin at
your blog or forum and get money for advertising on their network. It is not yet another url shortening web service. It is new generation of free target internet marketing.

I would like to have the possibility to have a list that I can change, and even include my own service (for example, in Portugal there is one of that services, sl.pt). Some are simple, as it might just be to make an API call that creates the short URL, but others might be more complicated as they need an HTTP call, and page parsing.
Other thing useful would be to be able to make this shortening services to be called with our credentials, like in but.ly, in order to see some stats.
That said, maybe we could have some options in the Configuration to, at least, select the services that we want to include in the main page list, reducing it to one for some, and increasing to 5, 10 or more for others, eventually. To include in the options some login info for that services would be the next step.

That said, this is a good improvement.

Viewista creates a short URL for “multiple” websites. Plus, you can view the multiple sites all at once. We think it can be a real time-saver. You can also post comments on the sites and share with your friends, making it a social URL sharing service. Viewista can be particularly useful on Twitter because a user can create a short URL for multiple sites on a topic without having to use multiple tweets.

It does not really matter to me which url shortener you use you just need to have it integrate with the API for that service. Tr.im and Bit.ly both have this capability and allow users to track statistics from the links they post. Twhirl already does this. It is the only reason that I still use that instead of TweetDeck. TweetDeck works better for my workflow.

This would be a HUGE asset to me and would likely position TweetDeck as a major player in the realm of pro twitter users.

Add Threely - 3.ly support... it's the shortest shortener out there, has a lot of features too! I use Threely for twitter all the time and it would be much more convenient to have it integrated into tweetdeck.

I would like to second (third?) Brian Layman and Joerg's request to be able to login to Bit.ly - one of the important functions of URL shorteners is to be able to track click-throughs, and without being able to consolidated all shortened URL's into one account it is a bit frustrating - currently the process is to login to Bit.ly separately to shorten the URL, and then post from Tweetdeck. But then why not just post it from Bit.ly? Anyway...

Too many services, which one is the best overall? I'm happy with Tinyurl. Good name, easy service.

I have found the http://u.nu/ is the fastest and creates the shortest URLs. I use it and/or http://is.gd/ because it "is good". :)

u.nu is not the shortest URL shortener. http://z.pe is. Try it. It's shorter by two characters.

Does it offer an unlimited REST API interface? Also, is there a webpage with a list of all/most of the URL shorteners?

I think that if TweetDeck offered a simple plugin type of interface so that endusers can create their own plugins for the various URL shorteners, the TweetDeck devs wouldn't have to worry about including them all in the main application. They could make their own plugins for a select handfull of the popular ones. Simple JavaScript may work, or some basic ActionScript, which is basically JavaScript anyways. You could have plugins like "tinyurl.short" or "bitly.short" for instance.

Am I going too far off base with this proposal?

(shameless pluc) I got another one: http://xm.my/ does URL shortening for locations on maps - a bit different from what traditional URL shorteners do. An API is currently in preparation.
