TweetDeck v0.25 - Memory Leak Fixes, Facebook Integration & shortURL/TwitPic Previews

We’ve got some good news to share with you.  A new version of TweetDeck is available with some much wanted improvements, including a fix for the memory leak issue, and great new features including short url previews, Twitpic thumbnails, recording of 12seconds video clips and Facebook integration to make TweetDeck even more useful to you, our users.  Plus TweetDeck is now recognised as the most popular application for Twitter driving 8.9% of tweets according to TweetRush. Plus with over 375,000 visits to TweetDeck.com last month and a growth rate of 32% we’re hoping to see this growth continue.

We know that many of our users have been experiencing problems with TweetDeck gobbling up memory and not releasing it.  The memory leak issue has forced some users to re-start TweetDeck regularly and we’re really sorry about that.  We’ve been listening and working hard, together with Adobe, making improvements to TweetDeck to fix the memory leak. Today we’re delighted to be able to tell you that the memory leak has been plugged and now the latest version of TweetDeck will peak at a certain level and won’t go any higher.  So you can leave your TweetDeck running all day, all night, or forever if you really want to.

We’re continuing to work on the overall memory usage of TweetDeck on an ongoing basis but we think you’ll be very pleased with the results of the fix for the memory leak issue.  We couldn’t have fixed it without your feedback and the help of a team of Adobe engineers too.

In the new version we’ve also added a preview function for short urls so you can view information about links directly from TweetDeck and see where you’re going before you go there. Simply click once on short links and an information box will appear, so you can see what your friends are tweeting about.  Click on the links in the box to be taken directly to the web page.  Plus for Twitpic links you can view a thumbnail of the photo inside TweetDeck, just click once to preview and then click on the image to take you directly to the webpage. Nice and easy. The short URL preview function is turned off by default but you can enable it and try it out by ticking ‘Show preview information for short URLs’ on in your TweetDeck settings.

We’re also rolling out Facebook integration to everyone so you’ll be able to view your Facebook friends’ status updates in a new column in TweetDeck. Plus we’ve made it easy to keep Facebook up to date, simply write a tweet and then choose if you’d like it to update Facebook, Twitter or both. You can also see when your friends’ are online and start a chat with them within TweetDeck, simply by clicking on their name (or the green online status indicator). (Note: To use the Facebook functionality you’ll need to give TweetDeck authorisation to access your Facebook information.  Simply follow the steps in TweetDeck to get started.)

Recording and sharing video clips has also become even easier.  Now you can record short videos directly from TweetDeck with 12seconds and then share them on Twitter and Facebook in just a few clicks.

Some of the other improvements we’ve made include:
  • Option to have usernames auto-complete in the tweet box.
  • Option to automatically include hashtags when replying to messages.
  • Removing the ability to DM yourself, and in so doing stopping many of you from feeling foolish.
  • Updating the list of URL shortening services to the top 5 only and adding the Digg URL shortener.
  • Making it easier to tab between the tweet box and the shorten box.
  • Removing unread counter at top of each column.  This has been making many of you feel stressed when you see thousands of unread messages and we don’t want to contribute to increasing your stress levels.
The update will automatically be pushed out to everyone from today and can be downloaded direct from http://tweetdeck.com. Please let us know what you think at hello@tweetdeck.com.

Plus we still need your help to continue spreading the word about TweetDeck so if you love TweetDeck please tweet and tell your friends about us.

I love TweetDeck, I use it daily... So congrats on creating an awesome application. I'd just like to make two comments, hopeful for future versions:

1) an "ungrouped" group - make forgetting to add people to a group much less apt to happen. Perhaps also a "double grouped" group?

2) TweetDeck support of multiple monitors. Currently I have tweetdeck spread across my monitors - but every time the screens go to sleep, or the screen saver activated, it completly loses it's screen position and reverts back to one monitor only. This forces me to drag it wider and reposition it every single time, somehwat irritating.

Other than that keep up the good work!

Just installed the new version, but having a problem any time I click a link. TweetDeck locks up for a good 30 seconds before the link is opened in my browser. Any suggestions? I've closed and restarted TD several times.

Also, the twitpic preview is cool, but doesn't that suck for twitpic? That's gotta kill traffic to their site, which in turn must kill ad revenue.

I love the unread messages counter at the top. It's the reason I use TweetDeck over Twhirl or any of the others - because I can see if there is anything I've missed out on.

Maybe make it an optional feature that can be toggled on/off?

Otherwise, these changes are sweet!

TweetDeck used to make my computer seize up after a few hours; I would exit and reopen it and be good for another few. Now, with the new install, TweetDeck simply stops working/crashes after ~30 minutes or so. I am running Vista on a Gateway w/ an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU and 3 GB of RAM - so my computer shouldn't be an issue. Something's really wrong still. I'm following only about 150 people. I'm really sorry that I can't use it. I don't care about Facebook integration, but I like TD's other features. I revert to Twhirl because it's stable.

TweetDeck may have plugged the memory leak, but you can get even BETTER memory performance by using the very small utility "TweetMem" available at http://tweetermashups.blogspot.com/

3) need to be able to CHOOSE whether or not we want the twitpic's and 12sec vids to popup in tweetdeck or link out to the browser

4) Automatically resize the images when you view somebody's profile in the column in tweetdeck...

5) Allow more than 10 columns

6) Suggestion: Add http://uservoice.com to your site so people can suggest these changes on there :)

OK, The url preview is very cool. But I can already tell that its implementation is going to get in the way.

Either make the available info a hover Heads-Up or use the option/alt key to invert the preference selection so that the user can 'see' or 'click through' as they deem.

This would eliminate having to disregard its usefulness because it gets in the way too easily if turned on. And will not be turned on for just the occasional preview if turned off by default.

Thanks.

-Still want preferences in the Menu on the mac. "Cmd ," & all. (too much mousing.)

You need to make these features that you guys keep removing user-selectable instead of just cutting them out and alienating the people that do use them. You did so with the Twitter Counter service and you need to do so with the unread counter. Also, is there a reason why the amount of tweets that show up when you first open the program has been reduced from 200 to 100? It makes things harder to catch up on missed tweets and then you have to go back to Twitter.com to catch up. I use tweetdeck because it negates the hassles of dealing with the normal Twitter-site but this update brought some of that hassle back. Please give users the options to toggle/alter these settings themselves instead of just cutting them.

NO NO NO... Taking the unread counts feature *out* isn't a good thing. It was a useful thing to have. If people were "stressed" you should have put a on/off preference for it.

And really, this odd behavior of only minimizing to tray (not behaving in the standard fashion) is really annoying for those of us with themes that hide the tray. I want it to minimize normally so it will go to Rocketdock like it should.

So now I can only get my wife's friends' facebook statuses. How do I log out of her account and log into mine?

There should be some options/warning for those of use who would rather cut off our arms than use internet explorer.

Are you sure you want to work with Facebook? They seem kind of sleezy if you ask me. Reason I say this is I got adware as a result of their allowing spammy advertisers access to personal profiles. Reason I use Twitter is it's honesty and ethics. I will support any legitimate advertising efforts Twitter wants to engage in but when you have to hood-wink someone in order to trap them with something nobody wants, well that's just plain wrong.

But one small thing would be great: The Option to have a custom notify sound.

That would be so great... I really don't like the built-in one.

Like the new version -- the app keeps getting better. Maybe I am in the minority, but I miss the unread counters. It was a good way to quickly see where activity was when I had to minimize the deck or step away. Would it be possible to have that as an option that you could activate in settings? Thanks!

Removing unread counter at top of each column

Please bring back this feature. I used it to know (a) how far down I should scroll to get to the first unread tweet (though a facility for doing just this would be nice), and (b) whether or not to declare Twitter bankruptcy and mark everything as read.

seems to be a display bug, at least in Vista. When Tweetdeck is maximized and a column updates, the column extends below the scrollbar at the bottom of the screen and also blocks the column buttons. It goes away when you scroll the column vertically. It also doesn't happen if you don't maximize the window.

Don't like v.025 at all... The 'unread' counter is missing, the twitpic preview is useless (cropped picture) and thanks to the reduced number of tweets you see after you first start TweetDeck (now 100, before 200) I'm missing a whole lot of tweets and have to go on the twitter web page to catch up on things, why, then, do I even need TweetDeck? I'm back to v0.21.6... Much better for my needs...

I actually really miss the 'unread' number at the top of each column. I can understand how and why others might have disliked it, but for me it was a helpful tool to check multiple columns at a glance to see what I'd missed - and saves me from having to clear seen tweets all the time for the same functionality.

Is there some way this can be an option, so everyone's happy? I don't see why it can't be a simple checkbox along with the other General Tweetdeck settings...

I'm having similar problems with the blank issue, only tweetdeck will not allow me to bring it up from the open-programs bar in Windows Vista. It loads it on the taskbar, and it shows it there on the open-programs part, but when I go to actually open it, it won't. It registers for a time that I've received updates, and then it goes blank like it has frozen.
The only thing that seemed to solve the bug was right clicking and clicking "maximize." Seems like something relatively minor, but I could be wrong.

Here's my issue: when I delete someone I'm following, that person still shows up when choosing who is in each column. In other words, when I stop following someone, their record IS NOT deleted from a column. This is very annoying and junks up a column with unnecessary twitter usernames.
