TweetDeck v0.24 Pre-Release: Facebook Integration

As the title suggests, v0.24 includes the first elements of Facebook integration into TweetDeck. This integration consists of two elements.

Firstly you can click on the Facebook icon at the top and, once you have signed into Facebook and given TweetDeck authorisation, this will add a new column full of each of your friends most recent status update which updates automatically once a minute. From here you can email the update out to anyone, tweet it out over twitter, view the users online status and if they are online right now click on their name (or the green online status indicator) to open Facebook chat right within TweetDeck.

The other element is the ability to direct your tweet/update to post to twitter or facebook or both directly within the tweet window. Note: direct messages will not be sent via Facebook even if you have the Facebook checkbox ticked.

This release is not being pushed out to everyone right now since it is still being tested. Do feel free to install it directly from http://tweetdeck.com/beta/TweetDeck_0_24_2.air but be aware this is very beta software and is at your own risk. If you are not comfortable with this then please wait for the next major release where this functionality will be rolled up and better tested.

Want to say a huge thank-you to Dave Morin, Josh Elman & Justin Bishop from Facebook for their support and help in putting this release together. As I said earlier, this is the first step in integrated Facebook into TweetDeck and there's a huge amount more to come.

UPDATE: following pretty much unanimous yes vote on whether to auto block message which start with @username from posting to Facebook, v0.24.1 has this functionality and is now available

UPDATE #2: some issues with expired sessions & facebook accounts where authorisation has subsequently been removed by the user are now fixed in v0.24.2

Hmm. Doesn't allow you to update status on public profiles (aka pages), though, does it? That would be the killer feature. Not sure if the Facebook API allows that, though.

Agreeing with Oliver on the screen estate. Would love to see a future TweetDeck version with columns in smaller height and on top of each other (like a grid).

And I second the comment about the @replies being sent to FaceBook. I'd rather not see all my @replies showing up on FaceBook, because the conversation is out of context.

I don't know if FB integration has anything to do with it, but TweetDeck has been more popular with #sxsw tweets, at least since I built this little #sxsw tweet analyzer.

One comment: I agree with Facebook User above; if I click the reply button to a Tweet, the reply field should automatically select to only send to Twitter, not FB. This would streamline direct @replies in Twitter.

Works fine on my MacBook Pro. Thank you for adding the Facebook integration.

Here are two suggestions:

1 Please give us the option to consolidate all streams into one column, that way I can always watch with one eye what's going on and continue doing work with the other, well, maybe not exactly, but you get the idea. AlertThingy is doing that one-column thing very well ...

2 Is it possible to make the interface more Mac like? The option for dark or light is fine, but why does TweeDeck need to look so different from everything else on my Mac?

Excellent integration work. One comment:

Facebook does not have a 140 charcter limit in a status post.

I suppose the limiting factor is twitter char limit. However, twitter/fb integration is already in place, leaving the option redundant for my setup.

Great going, guys! You just combined the two things I use the most, and now I don't need my browser for changing my Facebook status! About Facebook chat, the integration isn't exactly 'integration' because the chat window pops up and opens up a Facebook interface for it. It would be even more amazing if it used the same field used for typing in tweets.
Mar 16, 2009
Kris said...
I suppose what I was trying to get out from UI behavior potential is:

A tweet dialogue box update with: Twitter or Twitter + Facebook check boxes = 140 char limitation

else

char limitation = facebook/sms i.e. 160 chars

Huge, huge fan of TweetDeck. It’s a great application simply because it makes the service it mirrors, Twitter, even better.

But this integration with Facebook is a terrible idea. In fact, I hate this.

Twitter and Facebook don't complement each other well, especially when it comes to status updates. One's status on Facebook is an *action* - it reads to other users as if your name is saying or doing something, i.e., 'Sheamus is not happy with the direction TweetDeck is going.'

Whereas on Twitter, your status is not dependant on your name. It isn't an action, it's a statement.

Nobody should use any kind of cross-platform status manager and TweetDeck is now encouraging this.

Yeah, I can switch these functions off (and I have), but many people won't, and we're about to endure wave after wave of really ugly statuses on one or both of these platforms.

The Facebook pane seems pretty pointless to me. First, it ignores any of the new filters you may have set up within Facebook (after their recent upgrade), which means you’ll see the updates of all of your friends, as opposed to some within Facebook itself.

Second, if I want to chat to my friends on Facebook, I’ll have the network open in Firefox. It’s not a hardship.

Twitter and Facebook don’t mix well. I don’t think they ever will. For me, Facebook is a place where I stay in touch with close friends and family. Twitter is a social network where I meet new people and share content. And never the twain shall meet.

I admire what you guys have done with TweetDeck and appreciate that you’re trying to move forward and maybe tap into some of Facebook’s user-base, too. I hope you get more and more downloads and become the Twitter client (which you essentially are anyway, I think). But this integration with Facebook is not, in my opinion, the right way forward. It’s just going to lead to a lot of ugly status updates and some potentially major privacy breaches via FB re-tweets. Worse, I think it gives a credibility to both of these things to newcomers to TweetDeck (and Twitter), which I think is bad news.

I’ve written about my problems with this update on my blog and invite you to read the article and open a discussion. The link can be found here: http://twittercism.com/tweetdeck-facebook/

4) Could you make it so different Facebook feeds are addable based on your pre-made Facebook Friend Lists?

So far so good. Love the concept of this.

I second what others have posted: would love to be able to reply to FB friends' status updates from within TD.

Also would love TD to support multiple Twitter accounts; as well as other social networking sites, like ping.fm and such as well. Bring it all into one streamlined location. FriendFeed is 'supposed' to do this, but doesn't do it well, in my opinion. I much prefer TD.

Love the constant development of TweetDeck, truly has become my #1 social client.

If I had a magic wand thought I'd like to see a radio button instead of checkbox to choose where the post will go. I fear too many people will crosspost to Twitter and Facebook as a default now which turns TweetDeck into more of a Ping.fm type application.

On my wish list.. I'd love to see a 12Seconds.tv record button in the main post window and perhaps an while I'm dreaming.. be able to combine friends individually from Twitter, Facebook and 12 into a hybrid panel.

For me, the same behavior as Frances. Was working fine yesterday. But today, tweet does not post to FB (yes box was checked) and my Status column is blank. Just FYI as I know this is a beta. Too bad, I liked this interface and agree with some of the suggestions, especially being able to comment on a status update. For now, it is back to Facebook full-time. Thanks and keep up the great work with Tweetdeck.

Oh, and FYI. Whenever I try posting to FB, I see a blank FB "Allow" screen pop-up, go away, then re-appear. It continues this until I click on the checkmark to close the window.

When I removed the FB column and re-added it, I got the same blank screen but this time it only appeared momentarily and then stopped. It did not loop as it did when attempting to post a Tweet to FB.

My fiance was just complaining that there wasn't something like this. So thanks for making it :)

One problem though: I can't click the log in button for facebook. Then, if I close the window and click on the facebook icon again it doesn't do anything so I have to relaunch the program.

Agreeing with several others on this. Would love to see a future TweetDeck version with columns in smaller height and on top of each other (like a grid).

Also love the FB integration. But...perhaps not just show statuses of your friends and everything you would normally see in your FB newsfeed? That and the ability to comment would make this an amazing app!

love this feature, good job! ideal next step would be to 'like/unlike' statuses from tweetdeck and maybe even comment on them and read other comments.. that is most of my facebook experience and i would love to be able to handle it from tweetdeck!

Would be great if one could exclude some subset of their FB friends from the update stream in TweetDeck... to avoid getting dupes from people who also use Twitter (and set their FB status using the Twitter FB app).
Mar 23, 2009
Following up on @ZaneSelvans' suggestion, such subset could be one (or several) of the existing filters (aka friends lists) you can build on FB.

The integration is a phenomenal improvement for me and my Twitter/Facebook communication. Thank you!

You will also grab the latest version of TweetDect beta. http://tweetdeck.com/beta/TweetDeck_0_24_2.air

After you do all that, you should see the FB icon as the 11th icon in the bar at the top of TweetDeck window.

Here's a bug - today Tweetdeck couldn't get to Facebook because of site maintenance, so the Facebook account login screen was up. I was unable to use Tweetdeck because of this since no matter how many times I closed the login window, it popped up over, and over, and over, and over (etc...). Tweetdeck should still be usable even if it can't get to Facebook.

I've got another one: I was confused earlier today when I clicked on a friend's name and a Facebook window popped up. It was because they were on IM.
