Group Friends List

A few people have commented on the small number of friends INITIALLY available when adding a group.

The list of friends in the add group column grows as more of your friends become active, or to put it another way as TweetDeck becomes aware of who your friends are it adds then to the list.

I've done it like this since the twitter API only allows me to get 100 friends at a time so if you have thousands of friends TweetDeck would have to do some looping which could be quite slow but, more importantly, counts against your Twitter API calls. You only need to leave TweetDeck running overnight for the list to grow substantially.

I'm totally up for making this more immeadiate so if you have any ideas please let me know.

[UPDATE] I will be implementing a single call at runtime to get the most recently active 100 friends - which should give a better starting list for adding a group (for v0.15)

Now that I understand how it works it makes sense, it was just unclear. Keep up the good work.

A possibility that occurred to me (and I'm posting this on the uservoice page as well) is to allow people to add names directly to the group page. Tweetdeck can then check if the user is already following the name, if so then add the name to the group; and if not then automatically follow that person and then add it.

I'd like to request /second the idea of adding a poster to a group from the tweet deck screen. Maybe a button with a dropdown listing the groups available.

Thanks. Can't wait for version next.

I love tweetdeck, but the last 3-4 days, there are absolutely no tweets in the timeline. It shows direct and @relies, but no tweets. Too bad and I do not know what is wrong.

Thanks for this info...I wondered if it had something to do with 'activity' of the people I'm following. I was hoping for it to be an extensive list of everyone I'm following (to choose from & add to group). I keep 'holding out' for those friends of mine that I got to actually 'sign up' for Twitter...but don't actually make updates yet (sigh). Hoping they will post something...someday. These are the people that I would also like to put in a 'group'...but since they are not active, I don't see them in the list of people to add to this list.
Not too much of a complaint though, because I am certainly grateful for the functionality that TweetDeck IS offering me...and I very much thank you for that!!! :-)

Very cool, makes sense. I probably should have realized, as I have just finished a solid scan of the API for prospective development. :)

How about a manual entry ? Like, I can choose the user name, and add it to the group?

When creating groups in TweetDeck, I've noticed names I no longer follow continue to show on my friends list.

Took a lot of searching to find this answer. Suggest adding some type of notice in the app that not all friends will appear at first, a percent complete locating friends, etc. Would alleviate confusion, help people know this is not a bug. Just a thought. Otherwise, great job on Tweetdeck!

Definitely adding my vote for being able to add users to a group from the main window. Perhaps a little "plus" icon on each tweet in the stream that, when clicked, pulls up 'add to group' menu.

disclaimer: i absolutely LOVE tweetdeck, but this has to be the weirdest design decision i can possibly imagine. presumably the entire REASON the vast majority of people use tweetdeck is for the groups functionality. this is hands down the differentiating factor of your app. so to not even notify people why their friends list is only partially populated on initially running the app seems like adoption suicide! in addition, many of my 'favourites' are actually favourites because the chose quality over quantity, which means they are automatically discriminated against by your algorithm.

notification would be the poor man's solution in my mind, but would at least be better than the "gee, this thing's broken, guess i'll use another app" state of affairs. manually entering in those friends not in the list, preferably with auto-complete (cool new feature btw!) with proper name as well as username searching would be great.

finally, saving my groups to your servers so it can repopulate when i do a fresh install would be a sweet bonus addition, and one that might avoid this whole issue (disclaimer: i run linux so the AIR support is worse and arguably i'm likely to encounter this situation more often than others).

thanks again for your spectacularly awesome app, and thanks for reading my little rant here.

Great program, but almost ditched it because I couldn't add specific friends to my new group... COULD NOT FIGURE IT OUT! As everyone else has discovered they don't all show up. Please make an option to add friends by name... and/or list somewhere clearly that all friends aren't populated at first. (I still don't know when they'll come up?!) Pretty frustrating to fish around and wonder what you could possibly be missing... when it's actually an app issue.

How do you add new people to an existing group?

Repeating a previous recommendation - can we manually enter names once we know them? Would help with adding seldom-active individuals to groups.

Not only how can we add a new name to a group, how can we delete a name from a group and how can we delete a group?

I agree with D. Spencer's Mar 19 comment; it seems like a simple feature to manually enter names to a group? Why isn't this being integrated?

I'm still struggling to understand how the people showing in the choices to add friends for a group is created. I am looking for a specific person for instance, that is very active, replying and sending direct messages to me, and she is still not showing up in the list for me to add her?

An option to search and add specific friends would be great!

Another way of filtering the initially shown list would be to remove persons already present in another group. It is unlikely (or at least less probable) that you would like to a person in two groups

I can't see how to use groups. I've set on e up easily but how to get the columns to show something different to AllFriends, Replies, DMessages ???

ok :) jippee ... found it,
A new group is automatically added as a new column to the RHS of all existing columns. In my case it was off screen. There's a small slider at the bottom of the screen. Slide that and the rest of the columns come into view. Column widths don't seem to be changeable. It doesn't seem possible to switch between groups only to have all groups + the standard three displayed and then to scroll back and forth. Only other option is to delete a group.

I seem to be unable to add new groups. Is something happening off screen, or is there a limit to the number of groups I can have?

Please email me when the answer is available.

Thanks

I have manually added people to my lists and have kept tweetdeck running for a week, and still over half my friends still do not show - even those who tweet 10+ times a day! It seems to be only showing me the last 100 friends I followed.

when I click on other actions of someone that I am following, and click add to group, I can ad them to a group but then I cant OK that. There is no button there to say ok. Only spot you can click is the X and that closes it out!HELP

Groups are the biggest reason I downloaded TweetDeck, because I thought they would allow me to filter out my top 20 favorite tweeple from the thousands I'm following. Unfortunately, the groups function is currently USELESS! I could only find 2 people to add, with no explanation of why everyone else was missing. Until I read this post, I thought TD was broken.

Potential Solution:
Why not EXPLAIN how groups works, and then allow people to allocate a % of API calls groups the same way we can allocate a % to updates, mentions, DMs, etc.? I only update new messages once a minute (40%), mentions once every 40 min (1%), and DMs every 40 min (1%). That's 42% total, which leaves 58% unused that could be going towards building my available friends in the groups list that much faster. I only have 1600 or so that I follow, so at 100 per API call, it would only take 16 API calls out of the 150 I get each hour, so I'd have a complete list to choose from in one hour rather than having to "leave TD open overnight to 'substantially' (whatever that means) increase the list".

That makes MUCH more sense than how it is currently done. I hope the group function changes soon -- I'm sure other people are just as frustrated with it, and they won't all take the time to search on the reasons why. They'll just switch to Seesmic or some other interface.

Does anyone know how to delete OLD contacts from your tweetdeck list? I thought the contacts that come up when you hit the @ button are the ones that are in your twitter account. There are people in my contacts that I have not followed in months and are no longer anywhere in my twitter account. I have tweeted tweetdeck 5 times and emailed 2 times with no response. Please help if you can. Thank you.
