A TweetDeck For Every Occasion

If you've been following the news you'll have noticed that TweetDeck is broadening into the mobile world. Maybe you're already rocking out with TweetDeck on the iPad or DMing your mates on TweetDeck iPhone. If you're REALLY in the loop you'll know that we're also working on a mega-project to bring the next generation TweetDeck to Android (more on that soon).

Really though, that's not enough. There are hundreds of millions of you out there happy with your BlackBerry, Palm, Windows Mobile or handmade, jewel encrusted Linux smartphone. You need TweetDeck on your mobile and you need it now. We hear you.

Several months ago we embarked on a secret mission to develop a cross-platform full-featured mobile TweetDeck. We looked at a lot of options and after much deliberation decided the best way forward was to build an amazing version of TweetDeck to run on mobile web browsers.

The trends are clear. Mobile web browsers are becoming more powerful and standards compliant. HTML5 is looming on the horizon, tempting us with all sorts of web-based goodness. Mobile internet access is getting better, faster, cheaper. But that's just the beginning.

Battery life is a big issue on all mobile devices but especially older platforms. Using TweetDeck Mobile Web means you can check out what's going on when you want to and not have an app using valuable resources constantly in the background. Not only will this be easier on the battery but your phone will perform better in general.

Accessibility is another big issue. Using TweetDeck will be as easy as going to our url in a browser. Now you can check out the latest hashtags on your friend's phone without enraging them by installing software that runs forever in the background. We've designed TweetDeck Mobile Web to work on really slimmed down devices, so pretty much anything with a web browser will do.

Finally, by focusing our efforts on a single web based product we can provide the attention and resources to really make the experience shine. Web-based development is efficient and lean so you can expect new functionality to come fast and furious.

And rather than settling for a lowest common denominator approach, we plan to create style sheets and Javascript dedicated to each platform. This will provide an experience enhanced for each mobile browser. We've started by optimizing for BlackBerry devices but would love to hear from you about which platforms we should be polishing next.

If this sounds interesting and you want to chime in on the future of TweetDeck, we'd love to hear from you. Testing is about to begin and if you head over to http://support.tweetdeck.com/entries/174214 and sign up we'll add you to the testing list. We're excited to roll this out with your support.

Maybe you should try to fix the Tweetdeck for Ipad application first. It's worthless when all tweets appear in random order. #fail

I can't stand "mobile web applications", they drive me crazy. I use Android, and thankfully you are building a native app for that. Background running and notifications ARE GOOD THINGS, without stuff like that an app like Tweetdeck, to me, becomes useless.

Don't kill off the apps you have existing or planned. Mobile Web browsers aren't there yet. I avoid them if I can. If Tweetdeck moves only to that platform, I'll be looking elswhere.

Shane, we never said we're killing off our existing apps. Merely focussing our efforts. The Android app is coming very soon and the iPhone and iPad apps will continue to be improved moving forward.

This sounds very interesting, but personally I would rather see a full-featured app. I want notifications. I got a second monitor for my PC for TweetDeck to run on, so I've got enough space for monitoring tweets. The most important feature of a mobile app is for me notifying me whenever something's happened.
Also, this would exclude some browsers on older models that don't work so well will HTML5, JS, or even CSS.

Good enough. Thanks for the clarification :)

I was reading between the lines, I guess.

I have to agree-- I would rather have a full fledged app then use the web version. Too bad. =[

@timvdalen Sure, there are certain features that will not be possible currently with a purely browser-based app, but with the speed of innovation in the browser space at the moment one should be wary of writing off such a solution.
We will of course listen to our userbase and will be constantly evaluating what is working and what is not, to ensure that we continue to deliver an excellent mobile TweetDeck experience for as many users as possible.

Hi,
I am using Tweetdeck on all of my desktops and notebooks but have to use other tools on my smartphones (all of them are Windows Mobile and - regarding the disadvantages of WP7 in freedom of use - will stay there for the next time). For now I doubt a browser application will deliver the same features as a native app but due to the coming WP7 I do not really expect a Windows Mobile app. I would like to have the same application on my smartphones as on my PCs but it depends if it has all option I have now.

Regards

Peter

I think you guys are missing the boat on the BlackBerry. UberTwitter is the best Twitter app on BlackBerry right now (and in contention for best on any platform). Twitter worked with RIM to make a nice client as well. You aren't going to beat UberTwitter or the official Twitter app by making a web-based app. It won't integrate well with the BlackBerry, it won't support things like keyboard shortcuts, and it will feel half-baked. This strategy is going to fail on BlackBerry.

This sounds like a cop out to me. Pick the platforms you want to develop for and write good apps for those platforms. I doubt anyone is looking for a mobile Web site to go to. BlackBerry has one of the worst browsers on the planet--I avoid using it and use Opera Mini instead. I can always use Twitter or dabr.co in a browser.

Mobile web browsers will not notify you about new updates from your friends. Also its not as enjoyable as a full fledged app. So I would like to have a mobile client app of Tweet Deck for my mobile i.e. N900.

Hi Ian!

I use the comments function to reach and invite you at webcom in Montreal.
The Webcom-Montreal conference has grown to become the World's largest francophone conference on Web 2.0. On our last May event, our keynotes included Jimmy Wales, Tara Hunt, Clara Shih, Sean Power, Julien Smith, etc.. So, it would be great to have you as a keynote speaker for the Nov. 17 edition. (webcom is held twice a year). And please note that next November, we will be adding a Tech and Music 2.0 tracks at the conference and that the themes include Real-time Web, Geolocalization and Augmented Reality. Note that the conf. is francophone but speakers can use English or French for their presentations.

You can have more info on our conference that gathered more than a 1 000 attendees, went most trending topic in Canada on Twitter and unlocked the Swarm badge for the 1st time in Montreal ;-) by clicking on these links:

Waiting for a positive answer.

It'd be better for us N900 users if you can develop a TweetDeck for N900. The N900 is quite a powerful device and I'm sure that it can handle TweetDeck without much problems.

We, N900 users, hope that you can create a TweetDeck client for the Nokia N900.

Just like the heart and the lungs and the stomach, the skin is by definition an organ. Of all of the organs in mammals, the skin is by far the largest. This is why people with deep, massive burns are often not expected to live.

This is a great blog.
DeLonghi’s a pretty well-trusted brand - and with good reason! Their products usually work really well, whether they are heaters, dehumidifiers, or portable air conditioners. So this week, I’ve decided to take a look at the PAC-A120E 3-in-1 portable AC and see if it’s as great as the rest of DeLonghi’s other products.

Pretty disappointing that blackberry is not receiving a dedicated app. Doubt many people will opt for a web based solution. I think tweetdeck should look at the platform with the most users and realize its not going away.

Is it really so difficult to create an app for the BlackBerry? It would be a valuable investment of your time. A native BlackBerry app would work very well with the phone. With the way it stands, you will still be supporting and updating the iPhone/iPad & Android apps and leaving everyone else in the dust. These two types of users are clearly getting special consideration. Also, notifications will not work on other phones because TweetDeck will not be integrated with the phone. I will doubt very seriously that you can get this to work in a web browser, regardless of the platform.
