As Promised - A Very Special TweetDeck Delivery

A while ago we promised you that the next release of TweetDeck would be something very special. Well we have tweaked it and polished it and coated it with a sprinkling of TweetDeck magic dust, and now its ready for you enjoy.

There are so many shiny new features in this release that you may need to wear shades to use it.

For now though, here are just some of the goodies that are waiting for you in v0.32:

LinkedIn gets linked in

As we announced a few days ago, you can now add your LinkedIn account to TweetDeck. This will allow you to interact with your network of professional contacts just as easily as you can with your Twitter, Facebook and Myspace friends. You can add a LinkedIn column to view updates from your network, view profiles and comment on your contacts' status updates. And send your own update direct from LinkedIn, cross-posting to any of your other accounts at the same time if you wish.

Lists at the heart of the application

That's what we promised you, so that's what you've got. Twitter Lists in full, glorious TweetDeck style. Export your old TweetDeck Groups to new Twitter Lists or create Lists from scratch. We'll even give you great suggestions for who to add. Explore your friend's lists, following and creating columns when you find Lists you like. You can even create your own List by copying someone else's and adding your own je ne sais quoi.

Although your old TweetDeck groups are still available to you, you won't be able to create any more. Twitter Lists offer pretty much everything that Groups did, but with the added advantage of being fully compatible with Twitter. We think that you will agree when you see how Lists work in TweetDeck, so expect to see a lot more from us about Lists in the near future. We are very excited about our Lists-based future and we can't wait to show you what we are planning.

Retweets – Which style? Your choice!

Love them or hate them, the new-style Twitter Retweets are here to stay. And TweetDeck now fully supports them. New-style retweets will show up in your timelines, flagged with the retweet indicator and showing both the original tweeter's picture and the retweeter's picture.

But we know that there are many of you who would rather stick with the old tried-and-tested old-style retweets, allowing comments and editing.

So we have given you the choice. Each time you retweet you can choose to “Retweet now” using the new-style, or “Edit then Retweet” which will give you an old-style retweet. Don't want to have to choose each time? No problem. Just tick “Remember my choice” and TweetDeck will default to whichever option you choose.

Location, location, location

Another new feature that Twitter have recently rolled out is geo-location. This allows your tweets to be tagged with your current location, a function offered by an increasing number of Twitter clients.

In this version of TweetDeck, geo-coded tweets are identified by a yellow pin at the bottom of the tweet. Clicking on this pin will reveal an inline map showing the location that the tweet was sent from. Click the pin again and the map disappears. Be aware though, TweetDeck for desktop will not currently geo-code your outgoing tweets. This function will be available in TweetDeck for mobile very soon however.

Smarter and simpler

Adding more and more great features to TweetDeck is all well and good, but we need to make sure you can use them easily. So in v0.32 we have placed a big emphasis on improving the user interface for key parts of the application.

For instance, the standard toolbar buttons for adding columns have been replaced with a slick new Add Column screen which is now a one-stop-shop for managing columns, Lists and Groups in TweetDeck. We have spruced up the Settings window and the Profile window has also had a make-over.

There are lots more improvement to the user interface to come as well, so expect your TweetDeck to become a whole lot smarter in the future.

...and all the rest

Alongside these major new features, there are also a host of other tweaks, updates and fixes to help make your TweetDeck experience even better.

To get the full changelog, head over to TweetDeck Support, where you will also find a lot more detailed information about the changes in v0.32.

v0.32 of TweetDeck for the desktop is available now at http://www.tweetdeck.com

And finally..

A huge thank you to the team here at TweetDeck for their outstanding efforts in getting this release together.

Everyone has worked their socks off and all deserve a huge pat on the back:

Tom Woolway (@tomwoolway), James Whittaker (@jmwhittaker), Sol Plant (@lostplan), Reza Lotun (@rlotun), Steve Summers (@pocketsteve), Conrad Oldcorn (@conradoldcorn) & Jon Hatfield (@jon_hatfield) have all done outstanding work.

If you like what you see in v0.32, why not follow these guys and let them know what a great job they have done.

(And of course, you can follow our list too http://www.twitter.com/tweetdeck/team)

Thanks!

The RT functionality is very nice. I’ve been using the Google Gears script that showed the double avatar images on the Twitter homepage. It works just like that.

The option to use either RT version is very nice and works as expected.

A major problem with the list functionality for me is similar to the New Followers column.

When you mark tweets as read in a column, then clear them out (scissor icon in a column), they should stay gone. They don’t. So every time you clear a column, it just repopulates at the next update interval.

With Tweetdeck groups columns, once you clear them, they go away. They don’t just come back 2-3 minutes later on updating. They do this with the List columns. It pretty much makes them useless.

Unless I am doing something wrong, I’m keeping my old group columns up instead of using the lists. They just aren’t usable to me yet. It is annoying to clear the new followers column, but at least that is just one column. No way I can have 5+ lists repopulating constantly.

Of course the ones I'm testing so far are not showing all the tweets they should be, either. Same reason I don't use the Mentions column, and run a search column instead. Too many missed tweets in those Twitter-based columns.

With the vast amount of information Tweetdeck is now able to handle, I think a serious consideration of tabbed columns/panel should be given to the next release. It would allow for more screen real estate to be utilized while also allowing users to get more from the application than ever before.

Brilliant all! I too would welcome a non-AIR version, Windows only, but I you are now officially way ahead of the pack. I will doing a blog post at http://www.ericgreenspan.com soon and more training videos on the new version. P.S. Twitter Lists went down when I loaded the new version, so I haven't had the chance to play with them yet. Can't wait. All else is working fantastic. I have a few suggestions:

1. Do not default notifications to on for new searches, as I have to go turn them off each time I add a new column from search.
2. After sending a tweet/post to/from several sources, i.e. FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, Myspace, default back to the first and only source.
3. More info and more obvious when you have used up your API counts for a specific account
4. Create an exit icon next to logout, that shuts app off completely but retains login
5. Fix "red" color change when you reduce tweet length back under 140, it sticks now until you backspace again

When I saw that Tweetdeck was supporting Lists I was thrilled. After reading a comment from a user above, I'm less than excited about the current implementation. Marking tweets as seen and then removing them should keep them removed. Having them pop back again with future updates makes lists less useful. The other features in Tweetdeck look quite useful and hopefully the list feature will become more useful in the near future.

I think there's a lists related bug, as James Schipper mentioned: When you click either 'Clear all' button or 'Clear seen updates' button, the corresponding tweets disappear, that's OK. But they appear again when the app does refresh. I hope you fix this bug, thanks. By the way, I'm really happy with this update, thanks so much.

I hope my earlier comment did not sound like I was unhappy with the product. After the only problem I'd ever had using Tweetdeck, I was nearly in hives at having to use any of the other options out there. If I couldn't use Tweetdeck, I likely would have to taper off Twitter entirely. The other options are not even worth the trouble.

As far as the "bug" I spoke about, I am sure it has something to do with Twitter directly, as the Tweetdeck groups do things differently. I was not complaining about Tweetdeck, as I am sure the dev team knows about it. If they could get those columns to function like that, I'm sure they would. But for Twitter columns, it appears the clearing of tweets is not functional at all.

Marking them read does function and it retains that setting once that button is cleared. It's only clearing them with the scissor button that is futile.

Another thing I noticed with Twitter direct columns (New followers, mentions, lists), is that if you mark them as read, it isn't marking them universally as read, only in that column.

With Tweetdeck groups, if you marked a group column as read, they would also be marked as read in the All Friends column. It worked the same way if you marked the All Friends column as read, then all of the tweets in your groups would be marked read.

Now if you mark a twitter list column as read, they still are showing as unread in the all friends column. It makes clearing each group as you read them near impossible.

So basically with the Twitter list feature in place, the marking of tweets as read and being able to unclutter your feeds of the read tweets nearly doesn't work at all.

This isn't a huge deal for me at the moment, as I will just continue using the Tweetdeck groups unless it gets fixed. But the video did hint of them being phased out, which could botch that plan, of course :-)

Anyone have any ideas of what I may be missing?

The fact that each list uses an API call makes it a huge drain on real time updates. I have everyone in groups (5 in total including 1 "not in other lists") and I used to be able to have 1 "all friends" and multiple groups, which would update quite quickly (e.g. at 100% 24s), but now if I have 5 lists, each one updates quite slowly (again e.g. at 100% 1m37s) Am I missing something?
I think I too will stick to groups for the moment. Thankfully I don't think I have a need to create new ones.

And, like James Schipper, I should say that I love tweetdeck, and am happy with some of the new options (close/minimise to tray as an option!).

@spoon579 - Indeed the rate limit on Lists is imposed by Twitter and remains something of an issue for everyone working with it. However, the Lists API is only now starting to hit mainstream and hopefully that will lead to some changes in the way rates are handled.
It was a difficult decision for us to take to elave TweetDeck Groups behind, but it was a necessary move. Lists are the future and we needed to lay the groundwork for that future without having to also maintain another grouping methodology too.
Really appreciate your feedback. Lets all be sure to keep nudging the good guys at Twitter about the Lists rate limit too :)

Overall, I like the update, but I do have one issue with the way retweets are displayed. Unless I'm missing something, the only way to tell who retweeted is their userpic. Which basically means that if someone you follow changed their pic (or they don't post often enough for you to be familiar with it), there's no way of knowing who retweeted short of logging into Twitter on the web. I kinda thought the idea of TweetDeck was to not have to do that.
Dec 01, 2009

I knew they were well aware of it :-)

Tell us who or where to "nudge" the fine folks at Twitter to allow these changes, and the nudging shall commence immediately!

3. Why can't I get the history on my iPhone version, seems it doesn't sync with Twitter or Tweetdeck AIR, only what I last saw or what is to come shows.

@swadeshine What do you mean by "the app doesn't support lists yet"? You can now create and add already existing lists in TweetDeck as well as converting a Group to a Twitter list.

@Eric Greenspan All columns and lists are reloaded when you restart or log off and then back on in TweetDeck.

As for the other points:
1. I can start typing immediately after clicking the compose update button as well as after hitting the c key (compose update keyboard shortcut).
2. Might have been a Twitter issue.
3. Don't really understand the issue you're having.

Also, please remember that the best place to ask for help and support is the TweetDeck Support page which can be found at http://support.tweetdeck.com

I can understand the issue with the API rates, and I know that is a Twitter issue. As a matter of fact, I would think most of the List issues might be Twitter issues, still, the end result is that a List Column does not have near the functionality that, if I might say so, we are all used to with Groups:

1) Replies are not shown, unless the user replied to is also in the same list
2) New style Retweets are not shown

The end result is that the "All Friends" column, which I would say a lot of Tweetdeck users might just be ignoring, becomes a much more important column, which changes fundamentaly the way one uses Tweetdeck. I do think the new List functionality is great, and an important step towards the future. I just think that fully deprecating the old Group functionaility is jumping the gun a little. The way Lists Columns currently work is simply not currently a good enough replacement for traditional Tweetdeck Groups

Love TweetDeck and the list feature as I dreaded the thought of having to manually put together all my former groups as lists.

What I miss, however, is an auto-refresh of tweets showing up in my various lists without having to click the refresh button. Is there something I miss here?

Also, it would be great if TweetDeck would recognize my new re-set password and not return a pswd not recognized error when I try to verify my account.

The list feature is nice, but it has 2 annoying bugs. 1st: tweets you mark as seen in one column aren't marked as seen in other lists like they did b4 the update. 2nd: tweets that you mark as seen and then clear reappear after it refreshes, quite annoying. Really the first is the most annoying because I don't like having to re-read tweets, It is a real hinderence and slows you down, I frequently read stuff out of my favorites column, mark all as seen, then clear those tweets from every other column and start reading from there, saves time.

Otherwise, love the update! Will be posting a review on my blog shortly.

@BigE54 - You make some good points, and it is true that Lists do operate differently to TweetDeck groups in some ways, which could be seen as a step back in terms of functionality.
However, continuing to offer creation of TweetDeck Groups and all the overheads that come with them would have not only delayed this release, but also kept us tied to a grouping system that inevitably people are moving away from. We needed to take a brave step and focus our efforts on getting the most out of Lists that we could. It is different, sure, and we understand that, so we're doing everything we can to help the transition. And it may be that we all lose a bit of functionality initially, but making this step now means that we are in a fantastic position to bring you all the great new Lists-based functionality that is, without doubt, going to be heading our way. Now that every TweetDeck user is able to easily create and use Lists, the guys at Twitter will hopefully see that changes are needed and we'll be ready to support them.

@Joe Buhler Hi Joe, Lists will auto-update if you go to Settings > Twitter and adjust your Lists slider. You might want to check out this FAQ first though: http://support.tweetdeck.com/forums/63876/entries/83924

@Ryan - The problems you mention with 'mark as seen' should be fixed in the next point release, coming very soon.

Dec 02, 2009
BigE54 said...
If you say that leaving all of the previous Group functionality would have delayed this release, then I am sure that is the case. I actually think the new List functionality is wonderful. All I want to point out really, is what I hope would be one your goals as soon as is reasonable. I don't mean to speak for all users, but I think I speak for many when I say that the most prevelent use of Groups was to create a subset of All Friends, to make it easy to manage a lot of people who you want to follow. Groups made it easy to do that, as we were able to see all the tweets from anyone in a Group column, just as if they were in All Friends. Obviously, for now, a List Column does not behave just like All Friends. What that means is that you cannot rely on a List Column to show you all the tweets that someone in it makes. It makes managing a large group of people you follow a bit more difficult, as you need to go back to the All Friends column, which defeats the whole purpose of dividing up the people you follow, or go back to using a Group Column. I do hope that you are working towards bringing the full funtionality of All Friends to List Columns.

I love Tweetdeck and the new enhancements are great.

My only criticisms so far would be:

1. When I go to add an existing Twitter list, it seems I can only add one at a time. It would be great if I could import multiple lists (ie: all of them) in one go.

2. Column names for lists are not very clear. Since lists start with the name of the Twitter account followed by "/" and then the list name, all the list column titles show "@.../". In other words, you can only see the list name if you mouse over the column title. Since the Twitter account is already shown on the right hand side of a column header, it would be good if list columns could just strip out the "@.../" part as it's essentially redundant.

Keep up the great work.

Robert

First let me say I am a BIG TweetDeck fan.

Question: When I incorporate a Twitter List if a person on List A @'s someone not on List A I do not see it. I do follow them but cannot see the Tweet.

Example: I have a MN News List. If they send a Tweet to someone on the MN Sports List (someone in their own news room) I do not see it.

Is this my error (I expect it is)?

I ask because my Lists, the people in each one, cross over.
